I got a call the other day from an artist who was soooo frustrated. She spent all of 2012 working really hard at building her art business and marketing her beautiful art and got, basically, nowhere.
She told me how she had been active on Facebook, that she updated her website, sent out email newsletters, donated art to fundraisers, applied for a grant, and that she participated in shows and events. In the end, she sold nothing. "What did I do wrong?" she asked.
What was wrong was that all her efforts were based on what she felt like doing at the moment, ideas she read online, and tips from the various art marketing newsletters she subscribes to. She was all over the place.
I told her that when appropriate and done correctly, all the things she was doing could be vital to growing her art business, but because she had no marketing strategies in place to guide her, she was just guessing at what would work for her and she was missing some vital components to successfully market her art. The result? She worked hard but made no progress.
Sadly, it's what many artists do when trying to market their art.
I don't want you to waste a whole year working your butt off and getting nowhere, so here's the best piece of advice I can give you:
Strategy First, THEN Action
I know it's tempting (and easier) to just try this and that because it works for someone else or because someone said you should do it.
Resist the urge. If you want a better return on all the time, money and energy you invest in your art business, realize that having a guiding strategy will make your efforts much (much) more effective.
If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you always got - more or less.
Knowing what to stop doing, do differently or start doing takes a little effort but we can help you with that.
