Continuing on with this month's theme of "Changes," here are the three most important things you can do to smooth out the often bumpy road of managing your art business.
As a preface to what I'm about to say, please remember that I love you all and want to see your journey to success go as quickly and smoothly as possible. These things are important and require a commitment from you as an investment in growing your art business. Worth it? You bet!
Keep your skills updated.Sad but true, most people over estimate their computer and Internet skills. If you notice that you spend time struggling with multiple technical issues on a regular basis, I can probably guarantee that much of your stress and lost time comes from what's called a "PEBCAK" error - "Problem Exists Between Chair and Keyboard."
Just as you keep your art skills sharp, you really do need to keep your computer and Internet skills just as sharp, unless of course you don't use a computer or the Internet and these days that's just about, well, nobody.
I set aside two hours a week (more or less) every Friday as "get up to speed" time. Seriously, it pays off big time and will go a long way towards making your work life pleasant and as trouble-free as possible.
Keep your computer hardware and software updated.I know it's tempting to save money by using your old computer and software, like, forever. You CAN get by for a while before you upgrade, but if it's something you use often, it's really worth it to have newer equipment and software. Again, how much time do you want to spend wrestling with computer problems?
Sorry, it does cost a pretty penny but sooooo worth it. After all, you want to spend your time creating art and growing your art business instead of wrangling with technical issues. Your art is a business (or you want it to be). Budget in the cost of keeping current on hardware and software as part of your business expenses.
Keep your website, social media, and online accounts updated.Your website is the core of your online marketing, and maybe the first impression or the only time a collector sees your work before buying (or not). It must look absolutely stellar and have have current work and updated info. Same goes for social media (update those profiles!) and any online communities or websites you participate in.
Seriously, I speak from personal experience. I'm rather "frugal" myself and love to save money. I learned the hard way. I was a PEBCAK error, but once I started updating everything, I saved soooo much time and made so much more money because I wasn't constantly battling against my outdated skills, old computer and ancient software. Don't be a PEBCAK error, OK? So, keep your web presence, computer, software and skills tuned up, so your business can fly instead of hitting potholes.
