Monday, January 25th, 2010: The 9 Factors in “Exposure = Success”
Most artists want fame, followers, fortune and faith. With the possible exception of faith, all of these results require exposure of your work and your accomplishments. Once you master getting exposure, you are well on your way to creating your own success.
Monday, February 22nd, 2010: Create a Solid Body of Signature Work
Do you have a memorable style to your work? In other words, do you have a signature style? Can viewers distinguish your work from any other artist? If they can, there is a better chance they will not confuse your work with other artists, and will remember you.
* Monday, March 15th, 2010: Polish Your Public Persona
All fine artists perform for the public when it comes to marketing. And that goes double for all of you performance artists. Everything you do to market your art is the performance. You do not need a personality transplant as soon as you leave your studio. You do need to draw on different parts of your personality to get the word out.
Monday, April 26th, 2010: Manage a Qualified Mailing List
Your art making materials, methods and skills are your basic "tools of the trade." This makes them useful as business assets (not to mention deductible)! Another very important business asset is your mailing list. (So far it's not deductible . . .) A mailing list is an inventory of the people you know. If you apply care and thought to each mailing, the messages you send (emails, postcards, brochures, letters) will create a further bond or connection between you and your art audience.
Monday, May 31st, 2010: Photograph & Document Your Work
Strong images of your work are one of your most important marketing tools. Consider the fact that 90% of your viewers may never see your art in person. Photographs of your art must be strong enough to accurately and beautifully represent you and your work. All artists need professional quality photography to market events and to show their work to best advantage. Unprofessional photography communicates “I am still learning or not serious about being a professional artist.” If you are not skilled in photographing your work, hire someone to do so! You invest your best in your art – why not in showing it off?
Monday, June 28th, 2010: Generate Publicity for Multiple Events
Good publicity ignites the interests of everyone from browsers, buyers and collectors, to arts professionals and the media. If you are to spark further interest in your work, your art must be good, and the artistry of your promotion must be better. If you want enough exposure for your art for a long and happy life, triple-pronged self-promotion is now the minimum standard. You need a consistent presence in person, on the Internet and in print to build your reputation, your audience and your bank account.
Monday, July 26th, 2010: Leverage Art Business Relationships
Do you avoid going to art openings and other social events because you don't know what to say? Are you uncomfortable accepting a compliment about your art? You may not realize it, but you might be losing valuable chances to cultivate new collectors, representation or media exposure. And need I remind you that exposure = success? Artists who isolate themselves have a harder time making it in the art world. To make a good living making art, all artists need to master the art of relationship building.
Monday, August 30th, 2010: Market Your Art in Person and in All Media
Artists often describe marketing their art as an unpleasant activity to avoid. You would rather be making art. You know you have to do marketing to make a living. If a "spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down," why not sweeten your marketing efforts by thinking of them as opportunities for organized creative activity. Marketing starts by "meeting and greeting" and goes on from there.
Monday, September 27th, 2010: Discover Your Audience
Artists often ask how to discover their audience. When asked what steps they have taken so far, most respond that they have had open studios, entered local shows, put up a web site. What these artists have in common is that they have not given much thought to the people they are trying to attract so they can end up looking for love in all the wrong places. Selecting venues where you are most comfortable, and where you can easily transport yourself and your work is a good place to start. But it is only the beginning.
Monday, October 25th, 2010: Be S.M.A.R.T. About Your Art Business
New Year's resolutions typically fizzle out as fast as the champagne bubbles from the holiday celebrations. You will get more lasting results from a little planning. It helps to have a system. Artists in the A.C.T. community learn how to set S.M.A.R.T. goals to focus their business instincts . The acronym S.M.A.R.T. describes how to write your goals so that you have a better chance of succeeding. Each letter directs you to one of the five elements of getting things done.
