There are many ways to make money with art, licensing is just one.  "Licensing" means that you chose to give manufacturers the right to put your art on their product in exchange for a royalty. But how can you tell if licensing would be a good fit for your art and your lifestyle?

Art for licensing is commercial.  If that is a big mental block for you, you will not be happy in the art licensing industry. Quantity matters in licensing.  Manufacturers always need new, new, new! Art licensing is a business of deadlines and if you don't like them, think twice before you commit to licensing.

You maintain the control and copyrights to your designs, and you can license the same art to several manufacturers at the same time.

To make a good decision, you must ask yourself 5 questions:

  1. Is your art mainstream enough to appeal to thousands and not just individual collectors?
  2. Are you mentally okay with the fact that your art's purpose is to sell a manufacturers product?
  3. Are you flexible with your art?  How do you handle suggestions, input from clients, requests for changes in color, layout or design?
  4. Can you create art quickly and do you have computer skills to deliver art in a digital format, like Photoshop or Illustrator?
  5. Can you meet deadlines?

If these all sound like fun and interesting challenges, art licensing might be a great place to market your art! There are still many details to ponder. Luckily, you don’t have to do this alone.

Join us to hear Tara’s take on how to think about the five things that help artists give licensing a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down". Make this small investment of time and money now to save yourself time and trouble later– and maybe open up new income possibilities.
